LODESTAR JOURNALThe words benefic and malefic can sound like a judgment. In traditional Western astrology, they are old names for two small groups of planets. They do not divide people into good and bad.
Four planets have these familiar labels
Venus and Jupiter are called benefics. Mars and Saturn are called malefics. The first group was linked with more welcome or supportive themes; the second with more demanding themes. These are names used in a tradition, not a measurement of how a planet affects life on Earth.
The two groups do not cover every chart body
The Sun and Moon are read in their own ways. Mercury is not fixed in either of these two groups in the same way. So a chart is not a simple list of good planets on one side and bad planets on the other.
Start with the name, then the context
When you meet either word in a chart guide, first check which planet it refers to. Traditional astrologers also look at the rest of the chart before discussing a planet. You do not need to learn all those rules now. The label alone cannot describe your character or promise an event.
A few common questions
Is Mercury a benefic or a malefic?
Mercury is not one of the four planets in this simple grouping. Traditional astrologers can describe it differently depending on the chart context.
