What is the Part of Fortune in a birth chart?

The Part of Fortune is a calculated point, not a planet. Learn which three chart positions it uses and why its name is not a promise of wealth.

A chart may label a point “Fortune” or “Part of Fortune.” It is a position calculated from the Sun, Moon and Ascendant, rather than a body you can look for in the sky.

Three positions make one point

The calculation combines the chart positions of the Sun, Moon and Ascendant. The result marks a place on the chart. It does not add another planet to the solar system.

A traditional symbol

Traditional Western astrologers use this point when discussing resources and life circumstances. That is a symbolic interpretation of a chart. The name “Fortune” cannot establish how much money you have or what will happen to you.

Check the calculation method

Some methods change the calculation for day and night births; others use the same rule for both. If two charts show different positions, check their settings before comparing interpretations. You do not need to learn the formula to understand what the label means.

A few common questions

Does the Part of Fortune promise that I will become rich?

No. A calculated chart point cannot promise income or wealth. Your actual resources and choices matter when you think about money.
