The ecliptic sounds technical, but it is simply a line on a sky map. It traces where the Sun appears over a year. You cannot see the line itself.
A yearly path from Earth
As Earth travels around the Sun, the Sun appears in different places against the distant stars. Connect those apparent positions across a year and you get the ecliptic. It is a way to describe our view of the sky.
Why planets appear nearby
The planets orbit the Sun in nearly the same flat plane. From Earth, they usually appear close to the ecliptic, though they do not all sit exactly on the line.
How a chart uses it
Western astrology uses the ecliptic as a reference for zodiac positions. Finding a position on that circle is a map reading; giving it symbolic meaning is a separate step. The line alone tells us nothing certain about someone's character or future.

Can I see the ecliptic drawn in the sky?
No. It is an imaginary reference line. A sky map can draw it to help show where the Sun and planets appear.
