Which five planets are easy to see without a telescope?

Meet five planets you can spot with your eyes, and learn why the right date, time, and location matter.

Some familiar names in a birth chart also belong to planets you can see for yourself.

Start with these five names

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are the five planets commonly seen without a telescope. They are not all visible every night.

They also appear in traditional astrology

Traditional Western astrology uses celestial bodies visible to the naked eye. These five planets belong to that older group. Seeing one can make a familiar chart name feel more concrete.

Check your own sky

A skywatching app can show what is visible from your location on a particular date and time. Start by finding one planet, rather than expecting to see all five at once.

A few common questions

Can I see Saturn’s rings with just my eyes?

No. You can spot Saturn itself with just your eyes. A small telescope can reveal its rings.
