The twelve houses: a simple map of life areas

A short guide to what houses 1 through 12 are used to describe in Western astrology, with a few everyday examples.

Western astrology divides a birth chart into twelve numbered houses. Each house names an area of experience. Think of the list as a map of topics, not a schedule of events.

Houses 1 to 4: self and surroundings

1 is your own life and point of view. 2 is personal resources, such as money and belongings. 3 is everyday learning and nearby connections. 4 is home and family background.

Houses 5 to 8: creating and relating

5 is play and creative expression. 6 is daily work, care, and health. 7 is one-to-one relationships. 8 is shared resources and matters of loss. These names show which topic an astrologer is discussing; they do not say what will happen there.

Houses 9 to 12: the wider world and private space

9 is longer journeys, study, and beliefs. 10 is public work and reputation. 11 is friends and groups. 12 is solitude and what stays out of public view. For example, you might use house 2 to reflect on spending or house 11 to think about your place in a group. Your real circumstances matter more than a chart label.

A few common questions

Does an empty house mean that part of life is missing?

No. A house can be empty of planets and still names a life area in the chart. The label is not a verdict about your experience.
